Come learn to make liquid soap from simple fats and potassium lye. This class is for soapers who have had experience making soap with lye, either cold process or hot process, and are familiar with handling lye safely.
Carol Isler will introduce you to the chemistry and math involved in liquid soap making. You will observe a demonstration of her hot start liquid soap process, and then get the opportunity to measure and mix a batch for yourself. There will be samples of different liquid soap pastes you can try for yourself. Your handouts will contain several tried and true liquid soap formulations to try at home. But don’t let that limit your formula repertoire. You’ll leave with the skills to use Soapcalc to design your own formulations. Two-pound bottles of potassium hydroxide will be available for purchase for $15 (cash only). Carol will send out an email reminder of this a week before class. As a bonus, class participants will also receive free samples from Rustic Escentuals to take home for soaping.
Class cost: $129.00 (includes materials)
The Hands-On Soap Making class is presented by Rustic Escentuals, a Spartanburg owned and operated craft supply company which opened its doors in 2000. The class instructor is Carol Isler. For nearly 25 years Carol has been making traditional soaps like her pioneer ancestors did. A retired chemistry teacher and science department chair, she taught soap making to her chemistry students at James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan, South Carolina. Carol is a certified soap maker and soap making instructor through the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild. Through years of experience she has become an expert soap formulator, crafting soaps using locally sourced botanicals and base oils as well as fragrance oils. Her beautiful, natural soaps can be found online and in local boutiques.
Class minimum of 4 students and maximum of 10.
We keep class sizes small to ensure optimal learning experience. Due to the materials used, no one under 18 admitted.
